Physician Assistant (PA) / Nurse Practitioner (NP) - Cardiothoracic Surgery (Weekend Coverage)
Job Description:
We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) specializing in Cardiothoracic Surgery to provide dedicated 3-day weekend coverage, from Friday 6 AM until Monday 7 AM. This ongoing opportunity is essential for supporting our busy Cardiothoracic Surgery service and ensuring seamless patient care during weekends.

The ideal candidate will be a proactive and autonomous practitioner, comfortable with both inpatient management and surgical assistance. While the primary CT surgeon currently takes all first calls (nights/weekends), this role involves comprehensive patient management during the day and being available for call-backs for emergencies or additional patient assistance outside of scheduled rounding.
Responsibilities:
Friday (6 AM - End of Day Duties):
- Morning Rounds: Conduct comprehensive daily rounds with the attending surgeon on all cardiothoracic surgery patients.
- Surgical Support: Provide first assist in the Operating Room (OR) as needed.
- Vein Harvesting: Perform vein harvesting procedures if required.
- Procedures: Execute advanced procedures (e.g., Arterial Line insertion, Central Line placement, Thoracentesis, Chest Tube placement) if skill set allows and as needed.
- Consults: Evaluate and manage new patient consults as needed.
- Patient Management: Field pages regarding patient care during day hours.
- Documentation: Complete all necessary patient notes and orders in the EMR system.
Saturday & Sunday (Daily Rounds & At-Home Call):
- Morning Rounds: Conduct comprehensive daily rounds with the attending surgeon on all cardiothoracic surgery patients.
- Orders & Notes: Complete all necessary patient orders and documentation promptly.
- At-Home Call: After completion of daily rounds and associated duties, the PA/NP will be on at-home call and is not required to remain in the hospital.
- Emergency Response: Be available for call-backs to the hospital for emergencies or to provide additional assistance with patients during night or weekend day hours.
- Patient Management: Field pages regarding patient care during day hours.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program.
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications are required.
- Proficiency in procedures such as A-line, central line, thoracentesis, and chest tube placement is highly desirable.
- Excellent clinical judgment, diagnostic skills, and critical thinking abilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with surgeons, residents, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
- Ability to function autonomously and manage a diverse patient population.
- Comfortable being on call and returning to the hospital for urgent/emergent needs.
